NEWARK, N.J. – The mayor of Newark, New Jersey, said federal immigration agents “raided a local facility” on Thursday.
Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained multiple people, including U.S. citizens, U.S. military veterans, and undocumented individuals. According to Baraka, agents did not write a warrant.
“Today, agents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided a local facility in the city of Newark and detained an undocumented resident and citizen without producing a warrant. Gender was called into question,” Baraka said in a statement. “This egregious act is in clear violation of the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution, which states that the right of the people to guarantee that their persons, homes, papers, and effects shall be safe against unreasonable searches and seizures.” I will.”

An ICE spokesperson told CBS New York in a statement that the agency conducted a “targeted enforcement operation at a workplace in Newark, New Jersey” late Thursday.

The owner of Ocean Seafood Depot at Adams and Delancey Streets tells CBS News New York that about a dozen ICE agents were there unannounced around 11 a.m. Eastern, asking to see employee documents. he said.
“They didn’t have a court order, I mean, I didn’t even ask,” he said.
The owner said his manager tried to show him his veteran card, but the agent wouldn’t accept it.
“Several people were unable to show their identification,” the owner said. “In 26 years in the business, I’ve never seen anything like this.”
The owner said three people were taken into custody. Surveillance video showed what appeared to be federal immigration agents detaining a man outside the fish market.
When asked if he would prevent other employees from coming to work on Fridays, he said, “Yes, exactly. That’s the question. It’s obviously not really helping my business or the business. No,” I replied.
In a joint statement late Thursday night, New Jersey Democratic Reps. Cory Booker and Andy Kim said they were “deeply concerned about today’s news of the ice attack in Newark.”
They said their office has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security.
