According to CenterCal Properties, the East Bay commercial hub’s principal owner and developer, the supermarket will carry a variety of premium Japanese imports, including groceries, prepared-to-order food trays, health foods and other specialty items.
“Tokyo Central is the ultimate one-stop destination for Japanese specialty foods and lifestyle items,” said Matsumoto Kazuhiro, president of Pan Pacific Retail Management USA. “We are excited to bring Japanese quality and value to a diverse location like Bay Street Emeryville.”Pan Pacific owns Tokyo Central.
The new store is expected to be 40,600 square feet in total and is scheduled to open in 2025, according to CenterCal.
“Bay Street’s newly redesigned space will provide a unique cultural shopping experience for residents and visitors,” said Scott Bohler, vice president of development for Bay Street Emeryville.
Tokyo Central’s only other Bay Area store is in Cupertino, and the Emeryville store will be the company’s first in the East Bay.
“The addition of Tokyo Central completes our team’s vision to provide important daily living amenities to the surrounding community,” Bohler said.
CenterCal Properties assumed ownership of Bay Street Emeryville in 2021.
The real estate company has since launched an extensive redevelopment to reposition the commercial centre to survive despite major changes in consumer buying habits brought about by the rise of online retail.
Bay Street Emeryville has added 10 new restaurants and eateries, including Fogo De Chao, Flores Cocina & Bar, Mumu Hot Pot and Pippal Regional Indian.
This retail and restaurant center has added unique entertainment venues such as Tipsy Putt and Sandbox VR, and is also home to an AMC movie theater.
“Our team has worked hard to curate an enriching experience with our customers and the surrounding community in mind,” Bohler said. “We’re excited to introduce the new Bay Street Emeryville to the entire community.”
