DETROIT – City of Detroit residents now have more community-based options for health and wellness testing.
This week, Neighborhood Wellness Center groups are opening at seven churches across Detroit.
The opening of these centers is part of a collaboration with the Detroit Health Department and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
“We responded in 2020 with COVID-19 testing,” said Pastor Charles Williams II of Historic King Solomon Baptist Church, “and we also responded with vaccinations. But now, most importantly, we’re responding to stem the tide of health disparities, including high blood pressure, diabetes and access to quality health care.”

Williams II said churches like the historic King Solomon Baptist Church are at the heart of their communities, people trust them, so the church remains incumbent on them to take action.
“Too many people are going to the emergency room just for basic health care,” Williams II said, “so Black churches in Detroit are opening their doors across the city of Detroit to say, not only can we help you with your mental health, but we can help you with your physical health as well.”
The Neighborhood Wellness Centre will open in partnership with Community Health Worker Services.
Detroit’s Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair Razo said the city will offer free preventive health screenings to residents.
“We go beyond the walls of the health department,” Fair Razo said, “we go into the community and provide health screenings to residents.”
Lazo said the opening of the Neighborhood Wellness Center is a step toward equitable access to basic wellness services.

“We offer diabetes services, cholesterol testing and of course COVID-19 testing at local churches,” Lazo said.
In addition to screenings, the Neighborhood Wellness Center also offers a variety of comprehensive services.
