More than 50,000 Palestinians were killed during Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, announced by the territory’s Hamasran Ministry of Health.
That number -50,021 – represents about 2.1% of the territory of 2.3 million before the war, or about 1% to 46 people.
The Ministry of Health said a total of 113,274 people were injured in the same period.
The Gaza Ministry of Health (MOH) figures have been widely used during the war and are considered reliable by the United Nations (UN) and international organizations. However, Israel is consistently discussing the data released by the Gaza authorities.
International journalists, including the BBC, are blocked from entering Gaza independently by Israel, so they cannot see the numbers from either side.
The figures released by MOH on the number of people killed do not distinguish between civilians and fighter jets.
In November, the UN Human Rights Office said its analysis showed that nearly 70% of victims verified over six months were women and children.
In January, the Lancet Medical Journal published a study suggesting that the death toll was significantly 41% more than the official figures reported by the MOH.
The war was caused by Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. There, about 1,200 mostly civilians were killed, and 251 were taken hostage.
Israel responded to the October 7 attack with a massive military attack, causing massive destruction of homes and infrastructure, in addition to killing or wounded people.
MOH also reported at least 39 deaths in the last 24 hours on Sunday, bringing the total number of people killed since Israel resumed military operations on the territory on Tuesday to 673.
