Juan Soto could get the Red Sox back into postseason contention if Boston lands a top free agent sweepstakes on the market this offseason.
They have already had “productive” talks with Soto, and a blockbuster deal would energize the franchise and its fan base. The only potential “problem” with pursuing Soto is that the Red Sox have a much greater need to add impact arms to their starting rotation and bullpen to truly compete in 2025.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal highlighted that detail in Boston’s offseason schedule.
“My question for the Red Sox is No. 1: They’ve already mastered the art of being a left-handed hitter,” Rosenthal said Monday on Fair Territory. “Certainly, there’s only one Juan Soto, and he’s unique among left-handed hitters. If you can get him, you’ll figure out the rest. But the bigger problem for the Red Sox is that starting pitchers That’s what we need. There are obvious deficiencies in this team. They have prospects in all these positions. They’re in very good shape overall.”
Rosenthal listed big move ideas for the Red Sox, including trading White Sox starter Garrett Crochet and signing left-handed aces like Max Fried and Blake Snell.

“It makes more sense than signing Juan Soto unless you have other things planned,” Rosenthal added.
