Virginia Tech’s information technology master’s program received high praise Tuesday, ranking fourth in the nation in the latest 2025 U.S. News and World Report Best Online Programs rankings.
The rankings are updated annually and evaluate more than 100 universities across the country using a set of well-received, widely accepted metrics. Top-ranked programs have a strong traditional academic foundation based on strong enrollment, graduation rates, and instructor qualifications. We also excel in educating distance learners and offer solid career and financial support.
Virginia Tech’s Master of Information Technology (MIT) program is a collaboration between the College of Engineering and the Pamplin College of Business. The program also ranks No. 2 in the veteran division, marking the fifth consecutive year it has ranked in the top five in that division.

This recent ranking by Report highlights the University and Pamplin’s commitment to innovation, adaptability in a dynamic technology environment, and unwavering academic excellence.”
The College of Engineering’s overall online master’s program ranked within the nation’s top 20 for the second year in a row, tied for 18th place.
Two of the College of Engineering’s specific online master’s degree programs ranked in the top 10. These include:
Best online master’s degree in electrical engineering, up three places to tie for 8th place Best online master’s degree in industrial engineering, tied for 10th place

For the past 40 years, Virginia Tech has offered distance learning with recorded and archived online labs and lectures that allow students to access lecture materials at their convenience.
Additionally, the College of Engineering offers numerous certification programs that provide the flexibility needed by today’s engineers looking to expand and diversify their employment opportunities.
Additionally, U.S. News and World Report ranks Virginia Tech tied for 55th for online master’s in MBA programs. The university also performed well in its online master’s business program, coming in at 151st place.
