Flower industry closes store in downtown Jackson
A Jackson florist is closing its downtown location, but it won’t be going away anytime soon.
Front Porch JXN will open a store at 220 S. Mechanic St. downtown in summer 2023. However, owner Kendra Dolson said she received instructions from the city to renovate her home and decided to close the store. Use the savings on a fixer-upper.
Dolson said she plans to bring her flower business back home and will redesign the website to be suitable for online orders.

Say goodbye to Missy’s Little Grass Shack and say hello to its new owners in Grass Lake
Missy’s Little Grass Shack has been home to Grass Lake locals for many years, but it’s closing for new owners to take over.
Owner Missy Shellhart announced that she has sold the bar after operating it for nearly 25 years. She said she now wants to focus on her other restaurant, Swords Village Inn, 12000 E. Michigan Avenue in Grass Lake.
Schellhart said he sold the bar to Justin Klavon, owner of Klavon’s Pizzeria & Pub. Mr. Clavon declined to comment on his plans, but Mr. Shellhart said he is a successful businessman and believes he will do a great job.

Chad and Desiree Fires opened a coffee shop in downtown Brooklyn in August 2020 after realizing there was a lack of places for people to gather and drink coffee, Desiree said. . The coffee shop serves breakfast and lunch, as well as an extensive coffee menu.
The coffee shop sells a variety of lattes, hot chocolates, smoothies, teas, and cappuccinos. Callahan’s offers more than 40 flavors of syrup, allowing customers to customize their drinks, Fires said.

Barbecue food truck opens permanent location in Brooklyn
After several years roaming the state in food trucks, PB&J’s BBQ is opening a permanent kitchen inside Callaghan’s Coffee Cafe in Brooklyn.
PB&J owner Bert McClain and Callahan’s owners Chad and Desiree Fires met at a food truck event and became friends, the Fires said. McClain expressed interest in opening a brick-and-mortar location, offering a coffee shop at 109 S. Main St.
Chad and Desiree Fires are currently putting the finishing touches on the kitchen they’re building for McClain in the cafe’s former warehouse space. McClain hopes to open by the end of the year, adding that this will be a benefit for Fires and him.

Fortress Cafe closes downtown location, new coffee shop opens in its place
Fortress Cafe has closed its downtown location, but another coffee shop will soon take its place.
In October, the coffee shop announced on social media that it would be closing its cafe inside Lean Rocket Lab at 133 W. Michigan Ave. The changes will allow Fortress Cafe, which has been open there since 2018, to focus on its farm, online store and other locations. 1300 W. Michigan Ave. and Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, 205 N. East Ave.
Lean Rocket Lab will open a new coffee shop called Cafe Fuel in its location. As before, the store will brew Fortress Coffee and serve bagels and bread from Jackson’s Donation Bakery.

The famous Hinkley Bakery in Jackson has closed until further notice.
The donut shop announced its closure in a social media post on Wednesday, Dec. 4, without explanation. This comes after Hinckley Bakery, 700 S. Blackstone St., announced it would not be open until Thanksgiving weekend, according to its Facebook page. .
Owners Brian and Connie Hinckley could not be reached for comment. But a sign posted on the door Wednesday said the bakery was “continuing to make improvements to better serve you” and would close with “future updates.”

Restore The Star: Efforts underway to revive Brooklyn’s former gem
It’s been years since the marquee of Brooklyn’s Star Theater lit up, but a few flickering lights offer hope to Brooklyn residents.
The Star Theater (119 N. Main St.) was known as the “Gem of Brooklyn,” where many people went to see movies with family, friends, and dates. It opened in 1937 and grew in popularity in the 1950s, but finally closed in 1986.
While many attempts to revive the beloved theater have failed in the past, another group is giving the ring a try. Members of the nonprofit organization Irish Hills Sports and Recreation plan to restore the empty theater to host movies, shows and live entertainment.
