RAY – The Minot High School girls gymnastics team prepared for the Western Dakota Association (WDA) competition and the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) state championships with a weekend trip to Jamestown and Ray for two match weeks.
At the Jamestown meet on Friday, January 3, Julia Scali took first place all-around for the host team with a score of 36.050, Sutton Vangilder of the Blue Jays took second place with a score of 35.650, and Adilyn Belknap of Minot High School took third place with a score of 35.300. It became the rank.
The top two placed at the Ladies of the 80s event in Lae on Saturday, Jan. 4, were also the same, with Scali scoring 36.300 and Van Gilder scoring 35.050 at Jamestown. This time, Majets’ Pavin Peterson was third with a score of 34.900, and Belknap was fourth with a score of 34.850.
“It was our second game of the weekend so things were a little stiff. It took us a little while to get going today.” Head coach Robbie Werhow said: “Laikin Halverson had her second good match of the weekend and finished 8th overall. She has been very consistent all week. Pavin Peterson and Adilynn Belknap continue to be the top two overall finishers. We finished 3rd and 4th today.”
Six schools competed in the Jamestown competition, with the host team taking first place, Minot High School taking second place and Bismarck Century taking third place. The top three teams at the Ladies of the 80’s tournament held in Ray were once again Jamestown in first place, Minot High in second place and NW Stars in third place.
“Gracin Bergan tripped on the floor during warm-up and had to have her ankle taped, but she advanced with third and fifth overall on vault.” Verhau said. “Lexi MacLeod also injured her ankle during warm-up, which placed her 6th overall. Keira Davis added balance beam today, so we are working towards getting her into all four events by the end of January.” I hope you will.”
The Mudgets will host the Minot Invitational in their final contest before the end of the season on Feb. 7, and will host other smaller tournaments before their home tournament.
“This month is busy with conferences. It’s going to be tough, but by February they should feel strong and ready for WDA and state.” Verhau said. “I feel like their hard work is starting to pay off. I’m proud of the way the girls competed. Even when they didn’t warm up well, they didn’t give up. They came back and came back to win. ”
The Jamestown tournament was the first event after the holidays for the Mudgets. Davis was able to play in a game for the first time this season.
The 2025 NDHSAA State Gymnastics Tournament will be held from February 28 to March 1, 2025 at Jamestown High School.
The team competition will be held on Friday, February 28th, and the individual competition will be held on Saturday, March 1st.
