The Estevan women’s hockey team traveled across the border to Minot on Friday, Nov. 29 to play the Mudgets and had to pick up a 3-2 victory at customs on the way back.
Esteban took a 1-0 lead at the 9:18 mark of the first period when Ella Shenhar scored off an assist from Bostin Runge. Less than 30 seconds later, Bryn Hanson found the back of the net off an assist from Kamryn Galaas, tying the score at 1-1.
At 4:51 of the second period, Minot High School took a 2-1 lead over the visiting team from the North when Hanson put her second goal into the net off a pass from Yvonne Slynd. Runge scored his second goal of the game at 9:27 of the second half, tying the game at 2-2 with the first power-play score of the game. Tyra Kmita and Alex Reid had assists.
The deadlock was broken in the third period when Runge passed the puck to Samara Zegers on a power play for a goal at 13:17 of the final period in a 3-2 win over the Majets.
There were no penalties in the first period, but the Mudgets earned two penalties in the second period. Minot High School had three penalties to Esteban’s one in the third period.
Minot High School goalie Promesa Phelps was hit with 23 shots and stopped 20 of them. Estevan goaltender Myra Field was given 20 shots in the game and stopped 18.
Through the first two games of the season, Hanson leads the Mudgets with five goals and two assists. Teammate Sydney Balch had one goal and two assists, while Galaas had two assists.
The Mudgets host Bismarck Legacy vs. Bismarck High at Maysa Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 3, and then face Fargo North vs. South on Friday, Dec. 6 for their next Western Dakota Association (WDA) game this week. Go to war.
