A manslaughter investigation has been launched following the deaths of seven people aboard the Baysian superyacht which sank off the coast of Sicily.
Ambrogio Cartosio, an Italian prosecutor from the nearby town of Termini Imerese, said his office had opened an initial investigation into negligence resulting in death and negligent shipwreck. No specific suspects have been named so far.
At the press conference, prosecutors were asked about the culpability of the Baysian’s crew, given that all but one survived.
He said prosecutors were “focused on this particular aspect.”

Tributes have been pouring in for Hannah Lynch, who died alongside her father on a superyacht.
Sasha Murray, head stewardess on the Baysian, who was believed to have been rescued from the yacht, described Hannah as “a diamond shining in a sea of stars”.
“What most people may not realize is that she had an extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship with her parents, the people she loved more than anything,” she added.
Also killed on board were Morgan Stanley Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judith Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

The search for the remaining missing has resumed. The body of a fifth missing person, found the previous day but not recovered, has been brought to shore. The court-appointed armed guard tasked with keeping an eye on fraud-charged Mike Lynch to make sure he doesn’t flee paid tribute to the tech tycoon, saying his security team “has become more like family than we are tinkerers.”
Rollo Igno also spoke of Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, saying she “remembered a beautiful soul.”
Igno said he had the “privilege” of spending almost every waking moment with Lynch while he was in custody in San Francisco, and called the job unlike any he’d ever held and “life-changing.”
“The first rule as a senior police inspector is simple: never go near the principal,” he said.
“They’re not friends, they’re clients and the relationship is strictly professional. But with Mike, that didn’t work and for me that rule quickly disappeared.”

Timeline of the Sicily Bayesian luxury yacht disaster: Monday, August 19th – Wednesday, August 21st
The British-flagged Baysian Yacht sank at about 5 a.m. local time when a tornado struck the area. Fifteen people, including a mother and her baby, were rescued from the 55-metre (180-foot) yacht, but seven more people remain missing. A body believed to be the ship’s chef was later found near the wreck. A search is ongoing for six missing tourists. Those reported missing include Morgan Stanley International Bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer and Clifford Chance Bank lawyer Chris Morvillo. The yacht has arrived in Porticello with a team of four British investigators from Italy’s Yacht Accident Investigation Bureau (MAIB) to inspect the wreck site. Police divers are trying to access the vessel’s hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of 50 metres. Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, said initial investigations into the wreck had been “unsuccessful” due to limited access to the bridge and furniture blocking the walkway. The search for the six missing is now into its third day, with crews examining the yacht’s interior hull. A team of four British investigators from the Marine Accident Investigation Board (MAIB) arrived in Porticello to inspect the wreck site. Five bodies were found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon, of which only four were brought to shore. Body bags were seen being carried into Porticello port in the afternoon, where dozens of rescue workers were waiting.

Sicily’s top prosecutor outlined procedures for recovering the bodies of six people missing after the yacht sank, calling the incident a “tragedy of great importance.”
“The six people who desperately tried to rescue themselves were finally rescued,” prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said.
“Firstly, four people – banker Jonathan Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo, all four were rescued from the yacht which was at a depth of 50 metres.
“The other two were subsequently recovered.
“Michael Lynch died yesterday, the 23rd, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah was subsequently discovered yesterday morning.
“This is a very significant tragedy and to help reduce the scale of the tragedy we requested the assistance of firefighters and fire divers. They showed incredible courage and skill, performed a very difficult task and allowed us to properly examine the remains at the wreckage.”
