Michael Bispin thinks there’s something to do about the UFC’s eye charge.
This Saturday’s main event at UFC Seattle ended with controversy and confusion when the eye-opening ended early in a contest between Sonyadon and Henry Sejude. An accidental foul on Sejude occurs near the end of the third round and after giving him a five minute break, the action allows Sejude to head to round 4. It was temporarily resumed after admitting that it had not happened.
Judge Jason Herzog ruled the battle, and the judges went to scorecards early and awarded the battle to the song through technical decisions.
Bispin was featured in the commentary on Cageside, so he is surprised that the song was never punished for his brutal eye thrusts.
“No. 1, I think we should have deducted the points,” Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “And I don’t say that because I want to see what Song Yadong’s career is at risk or something like that. No, I like Song Yadong, I’m very good with Uriya Faber. We are friends and I have a lot of respect for the whole team.
“But the eyes thrust, people need to know that there are terrible consequences. The eyes balls are terrible. You know everything about my history with your eyes. The eyes thrust is bad. You get points When they start, people stop stretching their f*cking fingers, then when the third round began and there was only one minute left, Sonyadon put out his fingers, so did Henry Sejude.
If Herzog scored points from the song and the match still reached a technical decision, the penalty would have completely changed the outcome. The song was won by a pair of 30-27 and 29-28. The point deduction makes these 29-28 28-28, resulting in a majority draw.
As it stands, Song officially won the original two-division UFC champions in the book, and since returning from retirement in 2023, Sejude Falls has gone 0-3.
“We need to do something,” Bispin continued. “We need to impose more severe penalties. People who plunge fighters into their eyes need immediate consequences. That’s just as easy.”
At a postwar press conference at UFC Seattle, UFC CEO Dana White was asked if he was interested in Song and Cejudo being booked.
Bispin thinks the rematch makes sense, but wonders if that’s the right direction for Sejude to go as Crock carries into his career.
“Song Ya-dong was declared a winner because they went to the scorecard and he should have won it in two rounds,” Bisping said. “Maybe even in all three rounds, he was fast, he was fast, he stopped all the takedowns and boxing was beautiful, which is a shame that ended like that.
“They say they’re going to do it. Henry said he wants to fight back on it, the song said he’d do it, that was his idea. But Henry Sejude Do you do that at age 38? I really don’t know.”
Song and Cejudo have expressed their interest in running it, agreeing to a rematch on social media.
