METHUEN — The Methuen Mayor’s Office announced that Mayor Neil Perry passed away Saturday after a battle with ill health.

In a statement, his office praised the leader for his handling of recent health issues.
“Mayor Perry has battled many health challenges over the past few years, but each time he has bounced back with renewed vigor to take on, in his own words, the greatest job he has ever had – mayor of the great City of Methuen,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.
Perry announced in a March 2023 Facebook video that he would be returning to work remotely after being admitted to a rehabilitation hospital following “an incident that occurred during a routine dialysis appointment.”
Mayor Perry’s office said his final and “possibly greatest” accomplishment as mayor was the city’s purchase of the historic Searles Estate. Perry, a Methuen native, first took office in January 2020.
Councilman-at-Large David P. Beauregard Jr. will serve as acting mayor until a special election can be held within the next 60 days.
His office said more information was expected in the coming days.
Massachusetts officials offer condolences
Massachusetts officials took to social media to respond and remember Neil Perry.
Governor Maura Healey offered her condolences to Mr. X, saying, “Mayor Perry was a wonderful, caring person and a great leader. He believed in his community and gave so much to it. He will be greatly missed.”
Sen. Ed Markey said at the X, “I am saddened by the passing of Mayor Perry. The Mayor loved Methuen deeply and was an unwavering advocate for our city and its families. I am grateful for the Mayor’s service and collaboration. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Mayor’s loved ones and the people of Methuen.”
Rep. Lori Trahan released a statement that said in part, “All of our state knew that no matter the circumstances, Neal never gave up fighting for the interests of Methuen’s hardworking families. His leadership, determination and tenacity will be greatly missed. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and friends as they mourn this great loss.”
