Meta is asking California Attorney General Rob Bonta to block OpenAI’s plan to transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit organization. From the report: In a letter sent to Bonta’s office this week, Mehta said OpenAI was “taking and reappropriating assets that were built as philanthropic projects and using them for potentially enormous private gain.” “We should not be allowed to ignore the law.”
In the letter, Mehta goes so far as to say that he believes Elon Musk is “qualified and well-positioned to represent the interests of Californians on this issue.” Meta’s support for Musk’s fight against OpenAI is notable, considering just last year Musk and Mark Zuckerberg were talking about fighting in a literal cage match.
OpenAI started as a non-profit, but found commercial success with ChatGPT and now generates billions of dollars in annual revenue. CEO Sam Altman has made it clear that the company needs to move away from its nonprofit status in order to become more attractive to investors and continue to fund its ambitions.
