LYNCHBURG, Va. — The University of Lynchburg men’s basketball team will travel to Marymount University in Arlington, Va., to compete in the Pablo Coto Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 24.
The Hornets (1-1) are scheduled to play Amherst in the first round of a four-team tournament Saturday at 3 p.m. Marymount and Dickinson will also play each other on Saturday. The winners and losers of each game on Saturday will play against each other on Sunday.
Lynchburg’s final timeout resulted in the fifth-highest game point total in program history. The Hornets defeated the Warren Wilson Owls 122-66, with six players scoring in double figures, led by junior guard Pearsen Young, who scored a career-high 25 points. Freshman forward Jamarcus Brown (16 points), senior forward Mason Makovec (14 points), redshirt freshman Cole Callaway (11 points), sophomore guard Michael Gray (10 points), freshman forward Van Neressen (10 points) was the other Hornet player to complete the scoring double. Digit point.
Lynchburg has faced Amherst only once on the hardwood in recent history, two years ago in the Pablo Cotto Tournament. On November 19, 2022, the Hornets won 62-57. So far this season, the Mammoths have a 3-1 record, with wins in their last two games against Springfield and Rhode Island. Through three games, Amherst is led offensively by CJ Mitchell with 17.0 points per game.
Marymount enters the tournament on a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating both Penn State Brandywine and Susquehanna in the Susquehanna Tournament this past weekend. Guards Marcus Stubbs and Isaac Harris pace the Saints’ offense with 15.5 and 14.3 points per game, respectively. Dickinson canceled its first two tournaments of the year, Centenary and Eastern. Forward David Petrushev scored 39 points in two games, averaging 19.5 points per game and grabbing 6.5 boards per game.
After this weekend’s tournament, the Hornets are scheduled to return home for a game against Methodist prior to Thanksgiving on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 5 p.m.
