On Tuesday, September 27th, 174 student-athletes, coaches, and staff attended a seminar with Craig Dietz.
Dietz competes in open water swimming and triathlons. Dietz was born without limbs and was featured on ESPN 360’s “Unlocking Your Potential.” His swimming accomplishments include the 7.4-mile Great Chesapeake Bay Swim, South Africa’s Midmar Mile Swim, and the 1.5-mile “escape” swim from Alcatraz Island.
Dietz is currently a licensed attorney in Pennsylvania and enjoys bowling, skiing, volleyball, hunting, fishing, and playing the drums in his spare time.
Dietz never considers his lack of limbs to be a limitation. He delivered a powerful and moving message to the MCCC audience, emphasizing that the only limits we have are the ones we place on ourselves.
The idea for this seminar came from MCCC Athletic’s SALC (Student Athlete Leadership Council) in the spring. SALC proposed holding a seminar once each semester focused on preparing student-athletes for life beyond the playing field. Athletic Director Eric Grundman met Dietz many years ago and “always felt he would be a speaker who could get his message across to student-athletes in an effective way.”
