As many of you may have noticed, there have been some changes made to the electronic version. Additionally, it didn’t work properly for several days. I would like to take a moment to explain the details. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
Let’s start with the sports section. Traditionally, we have provided electronic editions divided into several sections, which are an important part of the printing process. However, since we are not currently printing every day, there is no need for a separate section in the electronic edition except on Thursdays. I thought that making the electronic version into one section would make it easier to turn the pages.
This caused confusion for readers who were looking for sports coverage but couldn’t find the sports section. Many comments have also called for the removal of national news. At the request of our readers, we have focused on local news, including local sports.
After that, comments started coming in because there was no coverage of domestic sports. That’s why we’re now re-adding top national sports stories to our website, MauiNews.com, and to our daily e-edition, the Daily News.
Just when I thought I could take a deep breath of relief, the electronic version went down. Our team worked hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, but technology was unwilling to cooperate. Like all newspapers, we partner with external software companies to provide electronic replicas of our newspapers online. As we all know, technology sometimes fails us. Add a little human error to the mix and the problem gets even worse.
The good news is that this shows that people are keen to read newspapers. We regret this blunder and understand that it may have been upsetting to many readers. But I assure you, no one did this intentionally and many people were working hard to resolve the issue.
I’ve been here for a little over three months now, and I admit I still have a lot to learn. However, I can say that I have never worked with a more dedicated team. Everyone who works at Maui News cares deeply about our readers. We have also gone through many changes and have become a stronger team through them.
Please know that we hear your concerns, read your comments and strive to improve with the ultimate goal of providing our community with quality local news that they want to read every day.
We will never be perfect, but we promise to keep striving to make each day better than yesterday. We have no intention of going out of business or closing our doors. We are supported by a company that specializes in local news and are committed to updating our technology and processes to become more efficient and continue the good work Maui News has done since 1900. Masu.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to you regarding the electronic version last week. We’re grateful to our readers, and you make it possible for us to do the work we do every day. With your continued patience and support, we will continue to grow and improve as a newspaper, a team, and a member of the Maui community.
