The Rams and Matthew Stafford have agreed to a restructured deal to keep the quarterback in Los Angeles, the team announced Friday.
The coordinated deal came after the Rams gave Stafford agent Jimmy Sexton permission to speak to other teams about his worth in the quarterback market. After discussing contract parameters with the Las Vegas Raiders and the New York giant, Stafford and the Rams were able to reach an agreement on a reworked contract.
With Stafford still in the Rams, the Giants are investigating all veteran quarterback options, including Aaron Rodgers, sources told ESPN’s Adam Shefater. Meanwhile, the Raiders are supposed to look into options for veterans, including Russell Wilson, Justin Fields and Sam Darnold, sources said.

Earlier in the week, Rams coach Sean McVay said on the Fitz & Whit podcast that the team’s “first goal” is to leave Stafford at the starting quarterback, but the organization is trying to balance the short-term and long-term roster decisions that come from the adjusted contract.
“There’s no controversy, and let’s not let him twist that when it comes to who he wants to be our quarterback,” McVay said. “Now there’s a layer to it. ‘Hey, how do we build on a continuous basis? How do we support him? How do we make sure he gets his value compared to those things?”
Stafford, who signed an extension with the Rams in March 2022, was guaranteed $4 million in 2025 and two unguaranteed seasons remained on the extension in 2026.

In his final offseason, Stafford agreed to a reworked deal. This is the adjustment that took until the Rams reported to training camp. McVay said he hopes the team and Stafford will clarify the situation “late” after the season.
“I’m proud of my whole career and I’m really proud of the way he played,” McVay said at a season-ending press conference. “The coolest thing you can say about Matthew is that he shines the brightest at his biggest stage. Looking at the seven playoff games he played because he was Ram, he gives him a chance every time you get on the field.
After Stafford spent his first 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions, the Rams traded with him before the 2021 season. In his first season in Los Angeles, Stafford and the Rams won Super Bowl LVI.
In 16 games last season, Stafford completed 65.8% of his passes for 3,762 yards, with 20 touchdowns and eight intercepts.
