After spending the football season off the sidelines and in the media business, former boss Bill Belichick and former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia are taking on a new role.
According to ESPN College Football senior writer Pete Tammel (and later confirmed by multiple sources including NFL insider Ian Rapoport), Patricia will become the next defensive coordinator for the national champion Ohio State Buckeyes Masu.
Patricia, 50, was recently the senior defence assistant for the Eagles in 2023. Prior to that, he was the Patriots offensive line coach in 2022. He also failed as head coach for the Lions from 2018-2020.
Apart from coaching in only years on offense, Patricia spent most of his career as a defensive coach. The peak of his time in the NFL came as New England defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017, where he oversaw two defenses in the Super Bowl.
He partnered with Belichick and now North Carolina general manager Michael Lombardi to host the podcast, “Coach Bill Belichick” during the 2024 football season.
Patricia replaces Jim Knowles and helps Ohio State recently win the national championship. After the winning season ended, Knowles was immediately hired by Pennsylvania, and he became the best salary defensive coordinator in college football.
