Two people were killed in a shooting Monday morning at a private Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, police said.
The shooting occurred just before 11 a.m. at Abundant Life Christian School, a K-12 Christian school, where police found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds, police said. did.
The gunman, a boy who police believe attended the school, was also killed.
“This is a sad, sad day,” said Madison Police Chief Shon Burns, noting that officers had located a juvenile suspected shooter, but adding that there was no longer an active threat.
At a press conference, police incorrectly announced that five people were killed, including the gunman. They later recanted that death count.
Police did not fire at the gunman.
In addition to the fatalities, there were also injuries ranging from serious to minor. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured or whether they were children or adults.
The ages of those killed were also unknown.
“Everyone in that building was a victim and always will be a victim. This type of trauma never goes away,” Burns said. “My heart is heavy for the community right now. My heart is heavy for Madison.”
The shooting took place last Saturday, just two days after the 12th anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting. It also follows the March 2023 mass shooting at a Nashville-area Christian school in which gunman Audrey Hale killed six people at her former school.
“As we await further information, we are praying for our children, educators, and the entire Abundant Life Schools community for their quick response,” Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement. We are grateful to the first responders.”
Abundant Life Christian School acknowledged the shooting in a social media post Monday, writing on Facebook, “We’re asking for prayers!” There was a shooting incident at ALCS today. We are following up. We will share information as much as possible.

Roads around the school are currently closed while Madison Police investigate.
Officials from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene and assisted local law enforcement.
Police said an investigation is ongoing.
