NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Members of the Marietta College football team have accomplished another remarkable feat. Defensive tackle Chance Knight was named to the Walter Camp Division III All-America first team for the first time. Knight completed another stellar year for the Pioneers, once again earning the Ohio Athletic Conference’s highest award for a lineman, the Paul Hernemann Defensive Lineman of the Year. Knight finished the season with 58 tackles, 12.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss, leading the OAC. After the season, Knight was named to both the D3football.com and American Football Coaches Association First Team All-American teams, and was also a finalist to be named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-American Team. For 134 years, the Walter Camp All-America Team, the nation’s oldest college football All-America team, has selected and recognized Division I’s best players. This is the first time this season that teams from other divisions have been honored. Walter Camp, the legendary former football coach at Yale University, is often referred to as: “Father of American Football” He is credited with developing the use of set pieces as well as determining the number of players on the field. He also created the line of scrimmage and four-down system. He made the first All-American team in 1889 and continued that tradition until his death in 1925. Teams have since been named in his honor, leading to the creation of the Walter Camp Football Foundation in 1967. was intended to be the purpose of the foundation. “We will perpetuate the ideals of the camp and continue the tradition of selecting an All-American team each year.”
