Nearly a year after his last start, Mac Jones is set to return to the NFL’s starting lineup this week. The former New England Patriots quarterback will be next in line in case Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars is out Sunday with a shoulder injury.
According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, it is considered “unlikely” that Lawrence will be cleared to play against the Minnesota Vikings. The next player, of course, would be Jones.
Jones, who was selected 15th overall by the Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft, showed great promise early in his rookie career. However, he seemed to hit a wall late that season and ultimately failed to develop into a franchise-caliber QB in New England.
After losing the starting job last November, the team’s new regime led by Elliott Wolf and Jerod Mayo (both of whom were on the team when Jones was first drafted) decided to part ways. Jones was traded to Jacksonville for a 2024 sixth-round pick. He has appeared in two games with the club so far, going 6-of-9 for 28 yards as a passer.
