FORT DODGE — The Webster City volleyball team got its first taste of tournament play here Saturday, finishing with a 3-2 record at the St. Edmond Invitational Tournament.
The Lynx had wins over Bishop Galligan, Pocahontas Area and Southeast Valley but fell short to No. 8 (Class 2A) Aplington-Parkersburg and the host Gaels.
Aplington-Parkersburg improved to 5-0 overall and won the invitational.
Webster City began the day with a commanding 21-15, 22-20 win over Bishop Galligan, then beat Pocahontas Area, 21-9, 23-21. After beating Southeast Valley, 21-18, 21-17, the Lynx lost to St. Edmond (21-15, 21-11) and Aplington-Parkersburg (21-11, 21-16).
The Lynx also beat Boone on Thursday, winning 25-17, 25-20, 25-20 in their home debut.
Marissa Hedeen scored 12 points and Olivia Galentine added 9 points for Webster City. Galentine (14) and Tristin Wright (13) were the leaders in assists.
Defensively, Chloe Savisky had 16 digs.
Haley Brim was flawless at the service line, while Gallentine, Wright, Headeen and Morgan Hackbarth each had just one error.
“The girls came out with passion and enthusiasm and really set the tone.” “We had a great time,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “We played well as a team. This is a good start to growing and learning.”
Webster City’s next game is Thursday in their North Central Conference opener against Algona, which also will feature the middle school awards ceremony.
