Saudi Arabia’s Ambitions The Neom mega project passed a major milestone on Sunday with the opening of the first project at the site.
Shindara, the “luxury island destination” first announced in December 2022 by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also Chairman of the Neom Board of Directors, has welcomed its first wave of guests.
The project is part of the Middle Eastern country’s Neom megaproject, which turned a 10,200 square mile area into the world’s largest construction site. The city-living venture was launched by the crown prince in 2017 as part of the country’s attempt to diversify its economy away from oil exports.
The island is located in the Red Sea about three miles off the Neom coastline in the northwestern part of the country.
Shindara is expected to eventually welcome 2,400 guests per day and create around 3,500 jobs in the process.
The island village and promenade will feature 38 restaurants, daytime eateries, late-night shops, and 36 high-end retailers.
It also includes a par-70 beachfront golf club with 18 tee points and two 9-hole courses.
When it comes to accommodation, you can choose from 440 rooms, 88 villas and 218 apartments.
Neom CEO Nadmi Al Nasr said: “With the opening of Sindara, Neom is committed to supporting a new era of luxury tourism in the Kingdom.”
“The realization of this landmark destination, the gateway to the Red Sea, is due to the visionary leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Saudi Vision 2030.
“This is a proud chapter in the NEOM story and we are excited to achieve even more ambitious goals with His Royal Highness’ continued support.
“NEOM’s first destination will give visitors a ‘first’ glimpse of what the future holds for our extensive portfolio of destinations and developments,” Al Nasr added.
Newsweek reached out to Neom via email for comment.
A spokesperson for the Neom project previously said the megacity uses 20 percent of the world’s steel in its construction.
“Neom will be our biggest customer[in logistics]over the next 10 years,” Neom Chief Investment Officer Manar Al Moneef said at a logistics conference held in Riyadh over the weekend of October 13. When you look at our demand in the market, that’s very important.” It accounts for 5% of the global logistics market. ”
She added: “We have 20 percent of the global steel market. If you look at our demand in things like elevators and cement…Simply put, Neom will be our biggest customer over the next few decades. “I guess.” he added.
