Bloomingdale’s announced that it will close its flagship store in San Francisco Center, San Francisco’s largest shopping mall, in April. The 330,000-square-foot store, owned by Macy’s Inc., occupies five floors in the mall, but has remained largely vacant since the coronavirus pandemic. Bloomingdale’s will join Nordstrom, which will close its mall flagship after 35 years in 2023.
Managed by a trustee after previous owners Unibail-Rodamco Westfield and Brookfield Properties exited in 2023, San Francisco Center was set up for public auction last year, but has been sold twice. It has been postponed. Bloomingdale’s lease extends through 2046, but it remains unclear how the retailer will terminate the agreement.
Macy’s plans to close 150 stores by 2026, and although the Union Square Plaza store is not on the closure list, it is up for sale.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie told KRON, “I don’t take this news lightly, but I am confident that the best days are ahead for San Francisco.” “There are big changes happening in the retail industry across the country, and we know there is a lot of work to be done in our city. I’m encouraged every day to see businesses opening and growing. Green is sprouting everywhere in San Francisco, and we continue to work to revitalize our city.”
