Hello AJ readers!
There was a lot of business news this week, including the closing of another pizza restaurant, a $6.6 million expansion at Covenant Children’s and the opening of Grassano & Pioquinto LLC CPAs.
A second pizza place announced it would close this month due to costs and increasing competition.
“Since we opened this location in 2022, six to eight competitors have opened within a three-mile radius,” Westside Pizza’s James “Red” Williams said, “which has taken a significant amount of pizza out of the market.”
Westside Pizza (6616 Milwaukee Ave.) will close on Sept. 20, just two weeks after Urban Bricks (7610 Milwaukee Ave.) closed its doors. Westside Pizza and La Bella Pizza are on the list of stores closing in 2024, along with the 2112 50th Street location.

Covenant Children’s Hospital has announced it plans to increase its bed capacity with a $6.6 million investment, and some improvements have already been made: A pediatric expansion is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. A NICU expansion is expected to begin soon and could be completed by mid-2025, the announcement said.

Grassano & Pioquinto LLC CPAs, 11001 Milwaukee Ave., opened this month. The firm “serves the accounting and tax needs of small businesses, individuals and trusts,” including bookkeeping, tax compliance and financial statement audits and reviews. Chamber members plan to hold a grand opening ceremony later in November.
Good Line Beer Co. also expanded into Wolfforth on Thursday, opening Good Line Public House at 217 U.S. Highway 62 #4. Good Line encourages customers to come check out the new location after enjoying some barbecue at Evie Mae’s next door.
While this may not be your usual business news, Mateo Rosiles and I teamed up to speak with the Lubbock Public Library System to learn about the great things they offer. We also met Mahon Library’s reptile celebrity, Tortellini the turtle. Read on to learn all the reasons why you should get a library card during National Library Card Sign-Up Month.
We’ll be visiting some up-and-coming companies next week to test the rumors, and we’ll have an article on fall drinks coming soon, so keep an eye out.
Thank you for always reading and supporting AJ.
