Hello AJ readers!
Hospitals, America’s No. 1 coffee shop, and AirBnB trending Lubbock made business headlines this week, so let’s dig into those topics.
UMC Health System and Texas Tech Health Sciences Center have been in the midst of cybersecurity issues for more than three weeks now. Although details remain difficult to obtain, we do know that healthcare facilities are still being affected. TTUHSC had to change the way it records employee hours. UMC patients recently regained access to the MyTeamCare patient portal, allowing the center to use the electronic medical record system and Find-a-Physician page.
Neither organization would say whether patient information was at risk.
Although Covenant Health managed to survive the cybersecurity event, it is feeling the pressure of being the only medical institution that is fully operational. Hurricane Helen also damaged the Baxter manufacturing facility in North Carolina, causing a shortage of intravenous fluids. This shortage, combined with already depleted supplies, has led the Covenant to suspend elective surgeries for the time being.

In the coffee category, Monomyth earned the title of #1 Best Independent Coffee Shop at the TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards in the US. The Lubbock shop proved what we already knew: Monomyth is great, beating out competitors in Los Angeles, Indianapolis, and Chicago.

Lubbock also scored a second unexpected win by ranking among AirBnB’s top 10 most searched domestic destinations this winter.
“Lubbock is gaining traction as a winter destination, and with its rich music history and vibrant arts scene, it’s easy to see why,” said AirBnB’s Lisa Cohen. Ta. “Nearby wineries and scenic landscapes offer a wealth of opportunities for outdoor activities, making Lubbock an attractive option for travelers looking to experience a different side of Texas this winter.”
