The Russian military court informed several members of the Ukrainian Azov regiment, who led the defense of Malipol’s major cities in the early months of the war, with the lengthy prison sentences being sent to several members of the Ukrainian Azov regiment, who led the defense of Malipol’s major cities.
The defendant was found Wednesday guilty of charges including violent seizure of power and participation in terrorist organisations and was given prison conditions between 13 and 23 years, according to the Russian prosecutor’s office.
Russia portrayed the Azov regiment made up of Nazis and nationalists, claiming the group was denial, and last year the US banned them from supplying weapons.
Mariupol city became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance after several weeks of protection underground in 2022 at the city’s large Azov Steelworks factory, which refused to surrender to Russian forces in 2022.
The Southern Regional Military Court in Rostov-on-Don has issued a verdict of the absence of 11 individuals, but 12 people have appeared in person. One member reportedly died in Russian detention, while the other members were later exchanged.
The incident was attended by members of the Azov Regiment, now part of the Ukrainian National Guard.
According to the prosecutors, the court established that individuals had “acted to dramatically change the Russian constitutional order.” Russian authorities designated Azov forces as terrorist groups in 2022 after launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The trial, initially called the “24-person case,” involves a Ukrainian prisoner of Oksandr Ishchenko, who died of a closed chest injury as a result of Russian chest injury due to “contact with a blunt instrument” according to Commander Azov, Vivatoslavia Parama, who cites experts from Ukrainian ancestors.
The Russian Human Rights Group Memorial has designated the defendant’s political prisoners, saying that there is evidence of violation, including cruel treatment, unbearable conditions of oppression, lack of regular food and medical care, insults, bullying, assault and torture.
The verdict coincided with Ukrainian National Guard Day. This was marked by President Voldymir Zelensky praised the National Guard for the courage and reaffirming Kiev’s diplomatic efforts to free all Ukrainian prisoners, including Azov’s fighters.
Zelensky said Kiev remembers “all Ukrainian warriors, especially the National Guard warriors, Mariupol’s defender, Azov Fighters, unfortunately remained Russian prisoners.”
“We work to free them and bring them home with all levels of diplomacy,” he said.
