Ukiah, Calif., August 16, 2024 — Mendocino County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services announced a groundbreaking ceremony for its new psychiatric care facility, scheduled to take place at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the facility’s construction site at 2840 South State Street in Ukiah. When completed in fall 2025, the one-story, 12,884-square-foot building will house up to 16 patients and provide 24-hour inpatient care. The building will also feature a reception room, commercial kitchen, day and treatment rooms, dining areas and more.
The project is funded by the California Department of Health Services and Measure B, a county initiative passed by voters in 2017 to improve mental health services in Mendocino County. Measure B had broad support and passed by more than 82%. The measure would add a half-cent sales tax to the entire county for five years, then reduce to .125 cents after five years, all to be used to fund mental health services.
The county has long needed such a facility because patients in crisis often need to be transported to other counties far from their families, and it is expected to reduce the impact on emergency rooms and hospitals that are offering beds to patients until beds become available outside the county.
