In a Washington Post op-ed published Sunday night, President Joe Biden recalled what happened four years ago when a violent mob stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021. He encouraged Americans to remember, not rewrite, their history.
“We must remember the wisdom of the adage that a nation that forgets its past is doomed to repeat it. “We cannot accept a repeat of what happened four years ago,” Biden wrote, adding, “A relentless effort is underway to rewrite and even erase the history of that day. To tell us we didn’t see what we saw. To dismiss concerns about it as some kind of partisan obsession. To explain it away as a protest that got out of hand. That’s not what happened.”
“On that day, as president-elect, I spoke to the nation and called for peace and a return to recognition,” Biden said, describing the chaos and violence that occurred four years ago.
“Four years later, I leave office determined to honor the peaceful transfer of power and do everything I can to restore the long-honored traditions in America. Elections certified peacefully. Biden wrote, adding that he invited the president-elect to the White House on the morning of Inauguration Day.
Biden also called on Americans to remember January 6, 2021 every year.
“And we should commit to remembering January 6, 2021, every year. To remember it as the day our democracy was tested and won. Remember, nothing is guaranteed either,” he wrote.
