It’s not often you see an NFL team sign a three-time Pro Bowler in December, but the Detroit Lions did just that on Sunday.
According to ESPN, the Lions will add Jamal Adams to their practice squad. Adams’ agent, Kevin Connor, told ESPN that the veteran safety agreed to the transfer with the hope that he could be promoted to the active roster.
Adams, 29, started the 2024 season at Tennessee, but things didn’t work out for the Titans. Adams appeared in only four games before being placed on the non-football injured list. After his transfer in mid-October, Adams asked for his release and the Titans granted it.
Adams has been a solid player throughout his career, but it’s not clear how much he was capable of. He entered the NFL as the sixth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Jets. During his three seasons in New York, he made two Pro Bowl appearances (2018 and 2019) and was one of the best safeties in the NFL. The Jets then traded him to the Seahawks before the 2019 season, and he made the Pro Bowl again in his first year in Seattle. However, his play has significantly declined in recent years.
Since 2022, Adams has played in just 13 games due to injury. He had 21.5 sacks in his first four seasons, but no sacks in the four seasons since then.
Adams has only appeared in one postseason game in his entire career, and that was a failure when he was with the Seahawks in 2020. He will be given a chance by joining the Lions, who currently have the best record in the NFC at 11-1. Not only will he get his first career win in the playoffs, but he’ll be joining a team with a shot at the Super Bowl.
