LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington VA Healthcare System will join the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, becoming the state’s 20th affiliated hospital.

The partnership aims to expand access to specialized cancer care, including clinical trials and advanced technologies, to Kentucky veterans.
The Lexington VA Healthcare System will be one of 20 affiliated hospitals of the Markey Cancer Center, Kentucky’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center.
The VA health care system serves approximately 83,000 veterans in central Kentucky.
The partnership is designed to give Kentucky veterans broader access to specialized cancer care, including clinical trials and advanced technologies offered by Markey Cancer Center, Kentucky’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. The partnership allows veterans to receive comprehensive cancer care, from prevention to treatment and survivorship, both within the VA network and close to home.
The Lexington VA Healthcare System serves approximately 83,000 veterans in central Kentucky and operates two campuses in Lexington and community clinics in Berea, Hazard, Morehead and Somerset. It offers a wide range of cancer treatment services, including a variety of surgical specialties, medical oncology and chemotherapy infusions, as well as services such as physical therapy, mental health support and social work assistance.
“By working with the UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliated Network, we combine our resources, expertise and dedication to provide comprehensive, cutting-edge cancer care specific to the unique needs of Veterans,” said Anna Rose, clinical nurse specialist for the Lexington VA Healthcare System. “Our collaboration provides increased access to cutting-edge treatments, advanced diagnostics and comprehensive support services, ensuring Veterans receive the best possible care throughout their cancer treatment journey.”
UK and VA have a longstanding partnership. The two institutions collaborate on research, education and patient care, and many UK faculty serve as joint faculty at the VA.
“We are excited to welcome the Lexington VA Healthcare System into the UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network,” said Colleen Schwartz, DNP, acting chief operating officer for UK Healthcare. “This new partnership will accelerate our joint efforts in cancer research and treatment, ultimately improving outcomes for Kentucky veterans and all cancer patients in the region.”
The Markey Cancer Center Affiliated Network was established in 2006 to provide greater access to quality cancer care and minimize the impact of cancer through access to education, prevention, clinical care and research. The network is one of only 57 cancer centers in the nation to receive NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center designation.
The Markey Cancer Center Affiliated Network is made up of 20 hospitals across Kentucky.
