A roundup of Texas Tech sports news for November 13, 2024.
Four Texas Tech Lady Raiders players scored in double figures to lead the Texas Tech Lady Raiders to a 75-68 victory over New Mexico on Tuesday night in Lubbock. With the win, head coach Christo Gerlich’s team finishes the season with a perfect record of 3-0.
“It was a really good win for us,” Gerlich said. “I think obviously New Mexico State played really hard. They came at us and did a lot of good things. And we had to make some adjustments throughout the game. We needed a lot of different guys to step up to give us some momentum.”There were times when we didn’t shoot the ball very well, but I think we did a good job and adjusted well like I said. , I think I played good basketball for the most part.
Jasmine Shavers led the way with 18 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. What’s interesting is that she didn’t score in the first half and only scored five points in the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, senior Jordyn Merritt had a game-high seven assists. She accomplished that in just 21 minutes of play time.
Tech held a slim lead for most of the second half, but in the closing stages Shavers scored 10 crucial points in the fourth quarter to help fend off a Lobos comeback attempt. The Lady Raiders will be back on the floor Saturday when they host Washington State at Central at 6 p.m.
The good news for the Texas Tech football team is that it has been selected to host this year’s NCAA Tournament game, marking the eighth time since 2012 that Lubbock has hosted a tournament game. The bad news is that the Red Raiders only earned an 8 seed in the tournament.
That means LSU, their opening opponent, is no slouch either. The Tigers enter this game at 9-8-3 overall.
Additionally, if Tech wins, it will likely face No. 1 overall seed Duke on the road in the second round. It’s a tough draw for head coach Tom Stone’s side.
“Well, we’re certainly going to be challenged from the get-go,” Stone said. “A very difficult first-round opponent in LSU, and the winner of our game could potentially take Duke. It’s that time of year again. Nobody gets a free pass and the level of competition they face. It’s part of the excitement and motivation to get into this situation. ”
Texas Tech and LSU will play Friday night in Lubbock in the Central Region starting at 7 p.m. The game can be watched on ESPN+.
On Sunday, Taylor Demerson made his first career start with the Arizona Cardinals and did not disappoint. After starting safety Jalen Thompson injured his ankle late in the week, Arizona needed Taylor Demerson to step up against the New York Jets.
Knowing he would start just 90 minutes before kick-off, Taylor-Demerson didn’t take long to focus on getting his first start. He had six tackles on the day, which was third on the team. Additionally, he deflected two passes, the most of any Arizona defender in Week 10.
“Yeah, I like it. ‘JT’ (S Jaylen Thompson), he just hurt his ankle a little bit on Thursday and with that (we) didn’t want to push him right now. We are very happy with “Rabbit” (Taylor-Demerson). (He) stepped in and played well,” Arizona head coach Jonathan Gannon said.
The Cardinals dominated the game, winning 31-6. This is the third consecutive home game in which the Arizona defense has not allowed a touchdown, and Taylor-Demerson played a big role in Sunday’s victory.
