Summer vacation is over and school will resume next week. The Surry State girls basketball team heated up its home court on Thursday, Jan. 2, for a game against the visiting Lady Sioux in District 6. The Lady Mustangs quickly warmed up and took an early lead en route to a 66-45 victory over their Region 3 foes.
Midway through the first quarter, Surry built a 14-0 lead against Westhope-Newburgh. By the end of the quarter, the lead had grown to 25-10, even as the Sioux prepared to attack.
Fouls were the only statistic that allowed both teams to start early in the game. Westhope-Newburgh committed four fouls en route to the point, while Surry had five fouls in the same amount of time.
As the scores went up, the fouls slowed down. In the second quarter, both teams’ pressure defense led to turnovers and steals. The Mustangs led 31-17 with 4:45 left in the second quarter, and the Lady Mustangs led 42-22 heading into the half.
The third quarter picked up where the second ended, with both teams focusing on defense. With 3:23 left in the third quarter, Surry held a 44-27 lead. Neither team had enough fouls to qualify for the bonus, but the Mustangs started to find their inside game and held a 51-29 lead entering the fourth and final quarter of play.
With the win, Surry improves to 2-0 in district play and 5-2 overall. Westhope Newburgh fell to 0-3 in district play and 0-7 overall.
The Lady Mustangs opened the season against Tioga, North Prairie, Berthold, Nedrose and Harvey Wells County. Surry travels to face Powers Lake vs. Burke Central on Saturday, January 4th, then heads north to face Mohall vs. Lunsford vs. Sherwood on Tuesday, January 7th, before hosting the next game on Thursday, January 9th. will play against Berthold in a home game.
The Lady Sioux opened the year against Powers Lake Burke Central, Dickinson Trinity, May Port CG, Bishop Ryan, TGU and North Prairie. Westhope Newburgh will host Glenburn on Tuesday, January 7th before traveling to Our Redeemers for their next game on Thursday, January 9th.
