PANAMA — Tyrone Clark Jr. could be the next big thing to come out of Western New York football.
On Saturday afternoon, the Climber/Sherman/Panamanian Wolfpack got an up-close look at the Lackawanna sophomore.
He came as advertised.
Clark ran 34 times for 270 yards and three touchdowns as the Steelers defeated the Wolfpack 38-28 in a nonleague game at Jack Keeney Community Field.
“I’ve never seen a running back this good,” Clymer/Sherman/Panama head coach Ty Harper said. “We’ve played against Zander Hind, we’ve played against Tioga at the state level, we’ve played some very good backs, Emmett Wood comes to mind, but Tyrone did a lot of things today that a lot of high school kids don’t do. He did it.”
Lackawanna, ranked No. 10 in Class B by the New York State Sportswriters Association, improved to 5-0 on the season, outscoring opponents 266-55 in the process.
Clymer/Sherman/Panama, the state’s No. 2 Class D team, fell to 3-2 overall, but its losses were to defending Class C state champion Waverly and the Steelers.
Saturday’s game saw a change in five plays midway through the second quarter.
The Wolf Pack’s Carter Brink caught Tate Catanese’s 48-yard touchdown with 8:32 left in the first half, and Catanese’s two-point conversion run gave Lackawanna a 16-14 victory.
On the Steelers’ third play of the ensuing drive, Clark ran for a 42-yard touchdown and added a conversion run to make it 24-14. Clymer/Sherman/Panama then held the short kickoff and Lackawanna recovered it at the Wolfpack 32-yard line.
“We put a lot of emphasis on special teams. We didn’t lose any special teams games, but it was hard to give them possession with fumbles,” Harper said. “…We made a mistake on that play.”
On the next play, Clark, who already has college offers from a number of schools, including Syracuse, ran for a touchdown, making it 32-14 after another conversion run.
“I thought we were in position to make a lot of tackles, but he’s just very physical,” Harper said of Clark. “There’s a reason he’s getting scholarship offers at 16.”
Clymer/Sherman/Panama turned the ball over on downs on their final two drives of the second quarter, once at the Lackawanna 27-yard line and once at the Steelers 16-yard line, with the visiting team up for 18 points. He took the lead and took the lead. Locker room.
“We definitely didn’t play well enough to win, and that’s my fault,” Harper said. “There were possessions and plays that we wanted back. We didn’t do a good enough job of finishing drives in the red zone.”
On Lackawanna’s second drive of the third quarter, the Steelers scored a touchdown on third-and-goal from the 15-yard line to take a 38-14 lead, and the Wolfpack never got closer than 10 yards the rest of the way.
Fifty-one seconds into the fourth quarter, Catanese connected with Brink for a 30-yard touchdown to make it 38-20. Then on the Wolfpack’s next drive, the two connected again for their third touchdown play of the game to make it 38-28. 5:58 left after Catanese’s 2-point conversion run.
“I thought Carter Brink was amazing today,” Harper said. “I thought Bryce (Hinsdale) and Alex (Barmore) were getting a lot of attention, but Carter was clearly able to exploit gaps in the defense. I honestly thought he was the star of the game. Ta.”
But Lackawanna, behind an offensive line led by 6-foot-4, 340-pound senior Sam Ikegwonu, ran with nearly 6 minutes left on its next drive, and with 1:08 left in the Clymer/Sherman/Panama punted the ball back to the field.
Catanese’s third interception of the game on fourth-and-5 from the Steelers’ own 48-yard line ended the Wolfpack’s last hope for a comeback.
“I’m very proud of the way we played in the second half. There were multiple points in the second half that we probably could have squeezed in and we were sorry for ourselves,” Harper said. “For the most part, the line did a great job. …We were giving up 100 pounds per person.”
The Climbers/Sherman/Panama refuse to shy away from a higher-class opponent in a nonleague game, hosting another Class B team, Lakeshore (1-4), at Sherman next Saturday for a homecoming festivities. We are planning to welcome you.
“When we schedule games like this, the idea is to play against our best rivals. At the end of the day, you always play to win games, but offensively we’re averaging 60 points a game. Playing the No. 10 team in state Class B with a close record… you can’t make it 10. It’s a points game, so there are definitely positives to take from this,” Harper said. . “We need to keep getting better every week.”
NOTES: Lackawanna ran 48 times for 303 yards, but committed 12 penalties for 119 yards. … Catanese completed 19 of 37 for 259 yards and three touchdowns.
