LAKEWOOD — Grace Katschke had a legitimate chance to advance to the singles semifinals at the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Athletic Association girls tennis tournament held this week at the Lakewood YMCA.
A 6-4, 6-1 loss in the quarterfinals on Thursday ended that chance.
Instead, the Frewsburg junior regrouped and competed in a doubles draw with senior teammate Brooke Golub, the Bears’ No. 2 singles player during the regular season.
We were both glad she did that.
The Bears duo dominated Friday’s two matches to advance to the semifinals and won two more matches Saturday to clinch the CCAA doubles title and the league’s corresponding top seed in next week’s Section 6 Championship.
“We were a little nervous today after two long days,” Frewsburg head coach Jamie Sposato said. “They came out and were excited and positive and had really good energy. … They finally got it done, which was great.”
Somewhat surprisingly, Fredonia’s Nella Darrell-Starbuck won the CCAA singles title Saturday with two wins of her own, defeating Chautauqua Lake’s Eden Ludwig 6-4, 6-2 in the final. won the title. The finalists defeated two undefeated falconer girls in the semifinals.
“My goal was to win county,” Darrell Starbuck said. “Now I think I can do more.”
In the semifinals, Kutschke and Golub defeated Southwestern’s Dani Mincarelli and Audrey DeLong, 6-2, 6-0. On the other side of the bracket, Orleans’ Lina Chaudhry and Natalie Snyder, both singles players throughout the regular season, defeated Falconer’s Rachel Swanson and Elena Barry 6-3, 6-2.
“She has doubles experience and I think she showed it today,” Sposato said of Kutschke. “The moment they started competing in the first few games, it felt like they were back as a doubles team.”
Kutschke and Golub then won the first set of the championship match against Chaudhry and Snyder, 6-3.
“She wanted to go singles,” Sposato said of Kutschke. “But the biggest thing was that she was going to give 110 percent in singles. Even if that didn’t happen, she wanted to go far in doubles.”
The Huskies duo fought back in the second set to win 6-3 and take control of the match in the process. Kutschke and Golub took advantage of the short break between the second and third sets to take a 4-3 lead in the decisive set and then won the final three games in a row to win 6-3.
“It was like a fog. I was like, ‘Okay, I know some of the mistakes we made.’ We missed a lot of shots. “I remembered what I did in the first set,” Sposato said of the break between sets. “Grace said, ‘Let’s do what we did in the first set, move really well and hit some parts of the court.'” They came out and it got pretty tight at the end. But it worked. ”
Darrell Starbuck and Ludwig did what no one else had done throughout the regular season, defeating Falconer’s top two undefeated singles players in the semifinals. Darrell Starbuck defeated Myra Brainerd 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 and Ludwig edged Riley Farugello 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
During the regular season, Brainerd defeated Darrell Starbuck 10-6 against Falconer and 6-4, 6-4 against Fredonia.
“It was really cool,” Darrell Starback said of coming out from the right side in the game against Brainerd. “It took a lot of effort.”
In the championship match, Darrell Starbuck won the first set 6-4 and then won 6-2 to take the title.
“The last two years I won in doubles,” she said. “I’ve been waiting for this.”
Swanson and Barry earned the final CCAA sectional spot in doubles with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Mincarelli and DeLong. Meanwhile, Brainard defeated his teammate Farugello, who eventually retired, 6-0, earning him the No. 3 singles spot.
The Section VI Championships will be held Friday and Saturday at the Lakewood YMCA. Top players from the Erie County Interhigh Conference, Niagara Frontier League and Buffalo Public Schools will fill each of the 16 slots. The game begins Friday at noon and continues Saturday at 3 p.m.
