Klarna has added a chat-based shopping experience to its artificial intelligence (AI) assistant designed to help consumers shop.
The company has also added more features to its AI assistant, powered by OpenAI, Klarna announced in a press release on Thursday (September 19).
“For decades, the tech industry has assumed that the online shopping experience was powered by a few large tech companies, which led to a lack of investment,” David Foch, Klarna’s chief product and design officer, said in the release. “That creates an opportunity for companies like Klarna, where we are leveraging AI to challenge incumbents.”
According to the release, Klarna’s AI assistant currently provides a chat interface to help shoppers search for specific products or brands, access key product information and identify items based on their preferences.
According to the release, the AI assistant will also help shoppers compare products, research activities like skiing or rollerblading to find product recommendations, and find products that match shoppers’ requirements around price, availability and delivery.
“Klarna is at the forefront of capturing the potential of AI to deliver tangible benefits to its customers,” Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer at OpenAI, said in the release. “We’re excited to continue our collaboration and demonstrate the power of AI at scale.”
In March 2023, Klarna announced that it would collaborate with OpenAI to use ChatGPT as a personal shopping assistant.
According to a joint study by PYMNTS Intelligence and AI-ID titled, “What Generative AI is Bringing to Retail,” Generative AI is poised to transform the retail experience for consumers.
According to the report, 77% of retailers rate generative AI as the most impactful emerging technology.
Klarna also uses its AI assistant to handle customer service tasks and answer employee questions.
In May, the company announced that its in-house AI assistant, Kiki, is used by 85% of employees, answers 2,000 employee questions per day, and has answered more than 250,000 inquiries since its introduction about a year ago.
Klarna has a separate AI chatbot that handles two-thirds of its customer service chats, helping consumers resolve issues in less than a fifth of the time it took before, taking on a workforce of 700 employees.
