President Coventry said: “I am extremely honored and thrilled to be elected president of the International Olympic Committee! I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my fellow members for the trust and support they have.
“The young girl who first began swimming in Zimbabwe years ago would not have dreamed of this moment.
“I am particularly proud to be the first female IOC president and the first president from Africa. I hope this vote will inspire many people. Today, the glass ceiling is shattered and I fully recognize my responsibility as a role model.
“Sports has an unparalleled power to unite, inspire and create opportunities for everyone. We are committed to making the most of that power. With all our Olympic families, including athletes, fans and sponsors, we have laid a strong foundation, embrace innovation, defend the value of excellence, and advocate for excellence and respect.
