Happy Friday! Wildfire smoke and high clouds from the remains of Francine are quietly blanketing the skies over West Michigan. That won’t change much tonight or through the weekend. Still, temperatures are expected to be in the upper 80s later today and tomorrow. High school football kickoff will be in the low 80s. By the fourth quarter, it should be near 70 degrees. Good luck!
The Northern Lights were visible in parts of the Lower Peninsula and definitely in the Upper Peninsula on Wednesday night due to a large coronal mass ejection. One or two more may be visible due to fairly active sunspots. High clouds may make viewing a little more difficult, but the K-index value was 5, which is usually high enough to see the Northern Lights in West Michigan. Keep your eyes peeled, especially if you’re a night owl.
Sunday won’t be as hot. We’re really getting into the details. Meanwhile, Monday will be just as hot as the weekend. For the coming week, warm high pressure will dominate over and above the eastern 2/3 of the US, bringing little chance of rain. There is little sign of this pattern breaking anytime soon. The long-range forecast looks to have temperatures in the mid-80s by next Sunday, the first day of fall. Have a great Friday. Have a safe and relaxing weekend. Join us at 5pm with Chief Meteorologist Keith Thompson.
