The Buffalo Bills quarterback appeared to injure his right arm early in the fourth quarter of the team’s 24-21 win over the New England Patriots. Allen, who took off on plays two and 10, was seen flexing his right hand after being tackled and falling to the ground.
Fortunately for the Bills quarterback, the injury wasn’t as serious as it seemed. Just like a few weeks ago, Allen took an elbow and hit just the right nerve in his funny bone. As a result, he temporarily lost sensation in his hands.
“Little elbow. I don’t know if it was the elbow, the helmet or the ground, but I lost feeling in my hand,” Allen told the media after the game. “Try your weird nerves.”
On the play after suffering a freak bone nerve hit, Allen threw a deep ball down the field to Dalton Kincaid. The pass was wrong and seemed to miss his hands strangely. The quarterback explained that his poor throw was because he couldn’t feel his hands when he threw the ball.
“I went to throw the ball and I couldn’t feel it in my hand…” Allen said. “It’s difficult to throw if you can’t feel it in your hands.”
Buffalo punted the ball away while the quarterback worked to get blood flow back. Allen said it took five to 10 minutes for feeling to return to his hand.
“It took about five to 10 minutes (to regain feeling),” Allen told the media. “Just to be safe, I’m trying to restore blood flow to that area and reactivate it. The more I leave it alone in such cold weather, the higher the numbers in my whole hand go. It was a strange feeling. I’m glad it’s gone now. is.”
Buffalo’s quarterback was able to return to the game on the offense’s next series, but admitted he probably would have missed time if the offense had had to get on the field right away.
Asked if he had any doubts about returning to the game, Allen said, “It depends on when we get the ball back.” “Fortunately, I was able to get some feeling back in my hands on the longer drive. If there had been a sudden change, I probably wouldn’t have been there.”
Buffalo’s defense was on the field for an extended period of time after Allen took a hit to the elbow. Drake Maye’s backwards pass bounced off the running back’s hand and the defense scored a touchdown. The unit then returned to the field for a five-play series. By the time the Patriots successfully punted, Allen was ready to return to the game.
Allen had an off day in the game, which the Bills won 24-21. He completed 16 of 29 passes for 154 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and rushed for 30 yards on six attempts. Allen didn’t necessarily play up to his standards, but the team found a way to win and the quarterback avoided any serious injuries.
