IAW celebrates 50 years of safe drinking water
Indiana American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, the nation’s largest regulated water and wastewater utility, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act, a landmark law that has protected public health. I’m proud to be a part of it. It has protected drinking water quality since its passage in December 1974.
Indiana American Water recognizes the 50-year impact of the Safe Drinking Water Act on water quality and the need for continued investment to address emerging challenges in water safety and quality. I’m emphasizing it.
We expect to invest more than $200 million annually in infrastructure repair and replacement and system resiliency, and nearly $1.6 billion over the next five to six years. This investment is in the spirit of the Safe Drinking Water Act and its mission to protect the public health of American Water’s customers and communities across the country.
Duke Energy upgrades more than 700 Franklin streetlights
Duke Energy has converted more than 700 street lights in Franklin to LED (light emitting diodes). New energy-efficient lighting replaces decades-old lighting fixtures, resulting in significant energy and cost savings for cities.
“Installing smart street lighting is good for the environment, good for the city’s bottom line, good for street safety, and ultimately good for the overall quality of life for the people who call Franklin home. ” said Mayor Steve Barnett. Mr. Franklin said in a statement. “We appreciate Duke Energy’s partnership in this important effort.”
The project is expected to reduce Franklin’s street lighting energy expenditures by nearly 27 percent, resulting in approximately $20,000 in annual cost savings.
The new LED street lights emit significantly clearer and brighter light than existing high-pressure sodium (HPS) street lights, which have a dull, amber-orange color. LED lights have a much longer lifespan, are safer for traffic, and have lower maintenance costs than HPS lights.
