President Joe Biden appeared to briefly doze off during an international rail conference on the final day of his first trip to Africa since taking office.
The president arrived in Angola on Monday and has spent the past few days meeting with regional leaders to discuss development projects. But a video showed the president falling asleep at Wednesday’s event, a summit to discuss the Lobito Trans-African Corridor Railway.
In a clip published by British newspaper the Telegraph, Biden can be seen closing his eyes while representatives talk about Tanzania’s contribution to the project.
Biden then put his face in his hands and remained with his eyes closed for a total of about 80 seconds.
Biden and Angolan President Joao Lorenzo hosted the summit, which was also attended by representatives from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Tanzania.
The White House said in a press conference that Biden has pledged an additional $560 million in funding to the project, bringing total U.S. investment in the corridor to more than $4 billion.
Biden has previously acknowledged that he struggles with international travel, and in June blamed his lethargic debate performance against President-elect Donald Trump during a recent trip to Europe.
