An examination of former US President Jimmy Carter’s personality in contrast to President-elect Trump makes for sobering reading (Jimmy Carter’s death occurred at a time of widespread hatred and uncertainty, December 30) day). Although we are days away from America’s return to chaotic politics, I believe that many Americans (and indeed many people around the world) still value common sense.
While I acknowledge that decency has come under fire (and become obsolete) in recent years in both the UK and the US, it is certainly the case that we are living in a narrative where vulgar politics is the norm and the only way to achieve decency. We must have a duty to the next generation not to accept this. Things are over.
As I write this letter on the last day of 2024, I am reminded of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s epic New Year’s poem, “Let the wild bells ring.” It is a clarion call to shout out and call out the negative things in society that destroy the individual, such as the “old forms of partisan struggle,” the “unfaithful ruthlessness of the times,” and the “slander and malice of citizens.” represents. The positive things: “a nobler way of life, kinder manners, purer laws,” and “love of truth and justice,” all these bring about the common good. We have the power to ensure that common sense is not consigned to a bygone era, but can thrive once again in the public sphere if we continue to nurture and cherish it.
