The Jets hope to catch Hale Mary along with Davante Adams.
Since the Jets decided to move on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers, broad expectations are that the next path to parting with Adams, who was relegated to the Jets through trade in October.
The easiest way to say goodbye is to cut down on Adams and absorb a $6.2 million death claim to the salary cap, saving just a small $32 million.
However, the NFL network reported on Sunday that the Jets were hearing Adams’ trade offers.
It would be very surprising to have a team who received that bait, considering inheriting Adams’ $38.3 million inflated pay cap hit while surrendering draft capital.
If the Jets can’t find a trading partner, expectations remain that Adams will be released.
As a free agent, Adams would want to pair the pair for the third time in his career with Rodgers.
The Rodgers-Adams partnership, which moves from one locker room to another locker room at MetLife Stadium, has set up an opportunity for revenge.
However, Jets star receiver Garrett Wilson doesn’t like to play second fiddles in that dynamic, and Giants’ Marik Neighbors will find themselves in a similar place after their stellar rookie season.
There’s no doubt that 32-year-old Adams can still play.
He totaled 85 catches for 1,063 yards (the sixth time since 2018, clearing 1,000 yards), and played three games with the Raiders and 11 with the Jets with seven touchdowns last season.
However, the Jets may need to accept the sinking costs to trade a third-round pick (73 overall) in the 2025 draft and rent Adams for half the season.
General Manager Darren Moogie said last Tuesday that the Jets “have a plan” to resolve Adams’ “problems.”
Free agent spending will open on March 10th, so plans could be resolved within the next week.
