Two teams in the country’s largest market are paying negotiated salaries to veteran quarterbacks.
For the Jets and Justin Fields, a two-year, $40 million contract makes him at the bottom of the list of starters who haven’t played on a rookie contract. For the Giants and Jamis Winston, the base deal is 20%.
It’s two years and $8 million for Winston through multiple reports.
He reportedly can double it with incentives, but the base deal screams “bridge” quarterback. And it puts the Giants in play and takes the quarterback third in the draft.
If so, it’s probably Colorado quarterback Shedale Sanders. This assumes the Browns won’t take Sanders with them on their second overall pick.
Whether that happens in round 1 or not. Round 2 – Or if the Giants get back to the bottom of the first round – it looks like they’ll pair Winston with the newcomer based on the value of the contract Winston signed.
And if they don’t, the giants will get a big bargain with Winston. Again, it’s basically the same deal he made in Cleveland last year, where he signed a year-long $4 million deal with an incentive of up to $4.7 million.
