Ja Morant made what might be the best dunk of the season Wednesday night in San Antonio.
The only problem for the Memphis Grizzlies star, which was a big boon for Victor Wembaneyama, was that the dunk didn’t actually count.
Morant ran around the wing late in the fourth quarter of the Grizzlies’ win over the Spurs on Wednesday and drew a foul. Morant very clearly drew a foul while he was still at the 3-point line, so everything that happened after the whistle blew didn’t count.
But neither Morant nor Wenbanyama stopped. Morant continued to rush toward the rim, where he collided with the 7-foot-3 star. Morant deftly stood up and threw a wild one-handed dunk over the outstretched Wembane Yama, sending the Grizzlies bench into chaos.
Just take a look:
Still images taken from under the basket are somehow even better than the video.
Morant had 21 points and 12 assists in the Grizzlies’ 129-115 win over the Spurs, improving their season record to 26-15. This is their ninth consecutive win against the Spurs. Desmond Bane had 21 points and Santi Aldama had 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Wenbanyama had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Spurs. Stephon Castle led the way with 26 points, and Devin Vassell added 21 points. They sit at 19-20 this year and have lost four of their last five games.
And even if it’s not technically in the book, Morant still ranks as one of the best posters of his career. The two teams are set to meet again Friday night at the Frostbank Center, but he’s sure to give it one more try before the whistle blows.
