Hello Amarillo!
My name is Randall Sweet. I’m a new sports reporter for the Amarillo Globe News.
I’m excited to begin this journey covering high school sports in the Texas Panhandle and have already made a great introduction to my new home. During my first week on the job, I was lucky enough to cover the Canyon and Randall volleyball game, the weekly coaches luncheon between Canyon ISD and Amarillo ISD, and an exciting football game between Sunray and Canadien.
As we learn more about the Amarillo region, we look forward to covering more events in the Amarillo region and being more present in all Panhandle communities.
I was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, but grew up in Lubbock and attended Lubbock High School. During my four years as a Westerner, I played soccer in addition to running track and cross country, and competed against many of the same programs and coaches I currently cover.
After graduating from LHS in 2018, I enrolled at the University of Oklahoma. After working in the OU athletic department for more than a year, I joined OU’s regularly broadcast news program, OU Nightly, and the school’s weekly sports program, Sooner Sports Pad, before joining Oklahoma State’s independent, student-run newspaper. I settled on OU Daily. .
As a sports reporter for OU Daily, I covered Sooners golf, wrestling, softball, and chronicled Oklahoma State Softball’s 2022 National Championship team. I also got my first taste of professional reporting, covering local high school sports as a freelance writer for The Norman Transcript.
After graduating from OU’s Gaylord College in May 2022, I worked as a communications coordinator at Visit Oklahoma City, promoting OKC through my writing. After contributing to the OKC Thunder on SI throughout my Visit OKC days, I joined the Sooners on SI team as a full-time beat reporter and videographer, once again covering OU sports.
In my role with SI’s Sooners, I traveled to Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Orlando, and many other destinations to provide complete coverage of Oklahoma State athletics. I plan to bring this same effort, passion, and work ethic to my coverage of high school sports in the Amarillo area.
The Texas Panhandle has so many great stories to tell, and I’m excited to continue learning more about the great people of this region.
