what happened
Monticello’s early attack showed potential. Possible ability to move the ball against Montini. Possibilities that the wise men were not able to exploit. And one Montini took advantage of it. Montini’s strong offense and great defense led to Monticello’s magical postseason run, which featured thrilling home wins over Benton and Unity under the Friday night lights at Hancock Stadium in the Class 3A state championship game. It put an end to the run.
what it means
Monticello’s second appearance in the state championship game didn’t end with the Sages taking home the state title trophy like it did in 2018. Monticello had a lot to do with that. The Broncos showed why they won their seventh state title since 2004. The first six were either 5A or 6A. It was an overwhelming performance. Still, getting a chance to play in a state title game is something most programs can only dream of, and Monticello has made it happen.
what’s next
It’s basketball and wrestling season for many of the wise men who suit up on Friday nights in Normal. But there was a long, nine-month wait for Monticello to begin the 2025 football season. The Sages, the last area team in the News-Gazette coverage area to compete in fall sports, open the 2025 season at Chillicothe IVC on Aug. 29 before a home opener and an epic Class 3A state semifinal rematch do. Unity will be held last Saturday, September 5th. I can’t wait.
what was said
“I’m so proud of our kids. It was a great team that we played. We did our best. All I can say is, what a great year for these kids. I think very few people have invited us here during the season, so I’m very proud of what they accomplished this year.”
