HMPV in India: India on Tuesday reported two new cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), bringing the total number of cases in the country to seven. The latest case was reported in Nagpur. On Monday, two cases were reported in Bengaluru and one each in Ahmedabad, Chennai and Salem.
HMPV was first identified in 2001 and is a respiratory infection that causes flu-like symptoms. People of all ages can be affected, but children under 5, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk. The Indian Council of Medical Research said HMPV was “already in circulation” around the world, including India.
The Center advised states to strengthen surveillance of respiratory diseases, including ILI and SARI, and spread awareness on prevention of HMPV infection. States are also increasing information, education, and communication (IEC) and public awareness on virus prevention with simple measures similar to those taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as washing hands frequently with soap and water. It was recommended to increase the Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid close contact with people who are showing symptoms of illness. Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
