India announced on Sunday that it had successfully tested an indigenously developed long-range hypersonic missile, achieving a major milestone in its military development, making it one of the few countries with advanced technology.
The global push for hypersonic weapons reflects the efforts of some countries, including India, which is working with China, Russia and the United States to develop advanced long-range missiles.
The Indian missile, developed by the state-run Defense Research and Development Organization and industry partners, is designed to carry a payload with a military range of more than 1,500 kilometers (930 miles), the government said in a statement.
“The flight data…confirmed the successful terminal operation and impact with a high degree of accuracy,” it added.
The test firing took place on Saturday from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the east coast of Orissa state, the newspaper said.
