The Eisenhower women’s basketball team looks to continue the basketball program’s upward trend, and head coach DJ Steinberg will have the experience and talent to make it happen.
“We are a Class 2A sized school playing in a 3A region and last year was tough.” he admitted. “We were a team with no juniors or seniors on our roster, but we finished under .500 (10-12 overall, 6-9 in region play). It was a great season considering our roster. But I’m hoping for more this year.”
The Lady Knights are led by junior Clara Steinberg, who averaged 20.2 points per game last season and earned all-region and all-district honors. A threat from the outside and driving to the basket, she also led the team in rebounds.
In addition to Clara Steinberg, junior Laney Font is also a threat thanks to her deadly 3-point shooting and tough defense.
“When Clara and Laney are both firing on all cylinders, it’s a tough combination for a team to deal with defensively.” Coach Steinberg said so.
The Lady Knights also return juniors Laney Belcher and Miranda Gates and add Tracy Jakubchak, a talented multi-sport athlete who has been away from the court for two years.
“Having Tracy back is a huge step forward for us and I think she will play a central role for us.” Coach Steinberg said so. “Her athletic ability, coupled with her great work ethic in practice, will help set the tone for this season.”
Eisenhower hasn’t won a playoff game in 15 years, but Steinberg feels they have the talent and desire to break that streak.
“We have to fight for the top spot in the region.” he said. “We have the experience, talent and drive to make it happen. These girls work hard not only for the team, but for the school as well.”
The Lady Knights begin the season Thursday when they travel to West Middlesex for tipoff at 7 p.m.
